Dearest Restrepo Velez Family,
What an inspiring and uplifting day we had honoring the life of Jose Luis!
From our warm, welcoming reception at St. Luke’s to the end of our time spent with the entire family at the invitation and
gracious hospitality to visit and have lunch at Trish and Jack’s home, we were witness to the beautiful legacy of Jose Luis
and Charo.
We did not know Jose personally, but knew the kind of man he was through knowing one of his beloved sons, Nick. As we heard
Shaun and David’s heartfelt words about Pucho, we met Jose through this loving grandson and son’s eulogies. After being with
your family for just this short time, it was so evident that only a man of such humility and faith could inspire your wonderful
clan to be who they are and who they are yet to be.
Thank you so much for including us to taste a bit of the loss, but more importantly to savor the reality of an honest to goodness
wonderful family in this part of their journey.

Primero que nada, un saludo muy especial y sincero pésame de parte de mi esposo y yo a la señora Rosario Restrepo y toda su
familia. Tuve la gran suerte de trabajar directamente a las órdenes del señor José Luis Restrepo, como su secretaria, al
lado de Henriette mi gran amiga, durante los años 1976 al 1980. Fue una experiencia inolvidable. El señor Restrepo me demostró
ser un caballero a carta cabal, además de un gran profesional, de quien aprendí muchísimo y pude comprobar la calidad humana
que poseía para ejemplo de todos los que lo rodeamos. Trabajador incansable y de una humildad encomiable. Durante ese tiempo
tuve la oportunidad también de conocer sus nobles sentimientos como esposo y padre de familia. Debe ser un orgullo para toda
la familia Restrepo haber tenido un ser tan especial.
Gracias por compartir tan bellas fotos que reflejan lo que yo siento ha sido el señor Restrepo en vida.

Un adiós a un gran amigo que nos deja unos recuerdos y un ejemplo tan maravilloso. Fue un padre y un esposo admirable, un
amigo fiel. Sirvió a su comunidad con un verdadero espíritu de nobleza, sencillez y generosidad. Tenía tanta paciencia y
muchísima sabiduría que compartía sin siquiera darnos cuenta. Así era José Luis, una mente privilegiada y la sencillez personificada.

Estimada María Rosario y familia : En el año 1968 llegué de Colombia a trabajar a la Secretaría General de la OEA y el primer
día, mi jefe chileno me dijo: “Venga que le voy a presentar al colombiano más importante de la OEA. Se llama José Luis Restrepo”.
Han transcurrido treinta y ocho años y sigo convencido que José Luis no solo fue importante y nos hizo sentir orgullosos
a todos los compatriotas, sino que además de ser un funcionario eminente, un gran señor y un caballero, posteriormente nos
dio ejemplo de inteligencia y coraje con sus escritos periodísticos siempre atinados, enjundiosos y verticales en su posición.
Descanse en paz. |

Two categories of memories stand out even though I have many others. In all walks of his every day life, the guards, chauffeurs,
clerks and support staff were all just as important to him as the senior level professionals with whom he worked and socialized.
In a restaurant the waiters or busboys were treated the same as the Ambassador he knew at the next table. He engaged even
the most humble in conversation and showed them the utmost in heartfelt respect. He had a “social conscience” long before
it was fashionable to have such.
He played many important roles in life but I am certain that husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin and
friend were the most important roles. In a visit just a few weeks ago we talked of the children, one by one. Their differences
and their similarities; their ideals and what made each of them tick. He related to me what each was doing. Not just the
children but the son-in-law and daughters-in-law as well. And yes, the grandchildren; not only did he know the names of all
of them; he knew all of them intimately. One-by-one he analyzed their characteristics, their strengths and weaknesses. He
was so proud of the family and loved them all so dearly.

While we know that death is an essential part of life, and that all creation is finite, loss of a parent is still difficult
to take; even more difficult to accept. None of us are ever ready to lose a father. It is an eventuality that, however inevitable,
is one for which we are incapable of planning. But in another sense, the loss is physical and we never truly or completely
"lose" our loved ones. They really do live on in us, and we can, from time to time, find them and communicate with them, not
via a crystal ball or psychic, but in our own hearts and via our own memories. Once the pain is gone, and healing past (but
never complete), you will in time find it out for yourself. In the meantime, know that your friends seek to share your burden
via their condolences. Do let them do that for you. It is truly what friends are for and what they do best. Cheers. |

I will always remember a very special lunch I had with Jose Luis some years ago. He was such a kind and interesting individual.
He gave me a copy of his novel. I felt like we we could have been soulmates despite the differences in our ages. I understood
him even better when I visited his beloved Medellin many years later. We all miss his calm, gentle smile and encouragement,
but I feel that we have a new friend in heaven watching over us now. My family offered our Mass and Rosary for him today.
When Kelly told Fr. Ron the sad news of his passing, he immediately said that he would offer tomorrow's Mass for him. Please
let us know if there is anything we can do to help. You can count on our continued prayers and support in whatever you need.
