Tom’s passion for the fire service, firefighter safety and education, is shared by many of us. Many years ago Tom seen the need for standardized firefighter training, and education, that would meet national standards. Tom has worked a lifetime attempting to achieve that vision for the safety of the Indiana Fire Service. Tom took a few of us that share this same vision under his wings guiding us with professionalism, direction, and integrity to fulfill this vision, through the passing of this torch. This torch will be carried with honor, duty, professionalism, integrity, and respect to fulfill this vision, protect every firefighter, and to honor the memory of Thomas E. Loraine. Tom, THANK YOU! You will be missed by all! Respectfully Randy B.

The Indiana Fire service owes him a great deal and he will be dearly missed. I've taken dozens of classes over the last ten years but the best fire service education I ever received was from the stories and conversations with Tom. You will be missed by many Tom. Comments: Excellent site-excellent mission. Hats off to the dedicated folks who are part of the Task Force. I recall sitting in a ballroom segment a few years back at FDIC listening to a featured speaker discuss training standards. I cannot tell you how embarrassed I was to be a member of the Indiana fire service, as this speaker made it quite clear that the state of Indiana’s minimum training hours was only 24 hours. 24 hours and we were letting people enter burning buildings. He could not believe it, and nor could I. I say this not because where I come from we have more resources that most, I say this from experience. Although we have raised the bar slightly higher since then, we must again raise the bar before we let people respond to emergencies and equally important……COMMAND emergencies. There is no place for people being officers because their friends made it to the annual meeting or it’s “their turn”. What most do not understand, is aside from making critical decisions on the scene, good officer training develops leaders. Solid leadership has a direct impact on member retention and helps develop future leaders. We must raise our standards and have a system in place to ensure that they are maintained. Let’s work together to get our fellow firefighters across our great state the resources they need to meet these standards. Maybe in a few years a featured speaker at FDIC will discuss what a progressive training and education state Indiana is.

Comments: I agree that training plays a very important role in the safety of fire fighters. How ever I feel that it will put a strain on smaller departments. Like many other departments ours is striving to maintain as much training as possible. How ever I have already heard from members who are saying they are not willing to participate in more training. They are finding it hard to keep up now as it is and still work and spend time with their families. I have fifteen years in the fire service myself and work locally and I know it is hard at times for me to keep up with training. Hopefully we can all work something out that will benefit everyone involved.

Comments: Mike is right in some respects- increased training and education will increase safety and the training does need to be funded. Both the Executive Director of the Indiana DHS and the State Fire Marshal are committed to keeping the costs low and I think they have proven that by offering the recent Mandetory class and WMD classes for free. I believe our biggest obstacle will be fire service supervisors and "leaders" who don't have the "wear-with-all" to take a stand and require competency instead of training hours. Loosing firefighters because of training is a myth. The Task Force conducted a study and found that most states that required additional training standards actually increased their membership. Chances are if you loose a firefighter because of higher training standards (actually not really even higher we are trying to get to the nationally recognized NFPA minimums) you lost them because they can't do the job, not because they didn't have the time- and to them I say "Good luck and Godspeed."

Comments: I would like to commend you and any others for a great and well prepared page for the fire & ems service. Training is a must within all of our sevices in order to provide improved protection and safety for all. The mandates that are adopted must have the means to provide funding for local training in order to accommodate the time commitment by those who serve with the fire and ems services, especially those protecting and serving small rural areas. While many of these issues will increase safety, it also decreases the individuals who are willing to serve in these capacities who are spending a considerable amount of time which takes away from their families and other commitments. There will be less numbers, with a greater area to serve resulting in an increased hazard for many rural residents and those traveling through rural communities.

Comments: Everyone at every level must get involved. Raise your own personal standards and in turn it will raise your own personnel standards. Turn off Jerry Springer and quit buying T-shirts from you know where. Purchase a firefighting textbook, get outside and pull some hose. If you're looking for a hobby, build model airplanes.

Comments: Firefighter training is infinite. When a firefighter states that they have received all of the training they need, it is time for that firefighter to re-examine their profession and to choose another. WE WILL NEVER KNOW EVERYTHING. Train today to prevent a tragedy tomorrow.
