Comments: I work for Cornell Cooperative Marine Program and this spring NYSDEC has written a grant for our monitoring program to assess the abundance, diversity, and ingree/egress of migratory birds like the red knot by implementing a survey consistent with the ISS protocols. The survey will be conducted on several beaches in Moriches and/or Shinnecock Bays on LI. We are going to continue to implemetn the fishery-independent horsehoe crab spawning activity survey weve done in the past years and overlap the ISS shorebird survey. We also will continue tagging of HSC to track seasonal and annual movements. Then we are able to assess the importance of HSC eggs on shorebird diet by contrasting sediment cores from shorebird foraging and non-foraging areas. The good news is this will give the NYSDEC information critical for managing of all the species involved.

The small Piping Plovers bennifited from there crusade, however misdirected it may have started out.
