I have a friend that grows all kinds of cactus. She gave me what she calls a day blooming cactus. It has white blooms. My

Generally very good advice. I must differ with you that most veterinarians me included know quite well what causes tear staining
but I agree that we consider it cosmetic and like yourself do not advise giving low dose antibiotics to cure it. |

I had been reading everything I could find about Black Skin disease, or alopecia, since our ten-year-old Pom was afflicted.
The skin on his belly and tail DID turn black, and all the hair on his tail fell out. His undercoat was gone, leaving only
the long guard hairs. We were frantic, and took him to our vet. He tested Max's blood, and ruled out thyroid problems.
He gave us some dietary supplement, which did absolutely no good whatsoever.
In desperation, I went to Pet Smart looking for something which might help, and I found "Derm Care" capsules. Said it was
"veterinary strength" for small dogs under 30 pounds. Just give them one capsule a day. Well, I figured if one was good,
two were better. I just clipped off the end and put it on his food. All it is is fish oil with Omega-3 and some other stuff.
Now the bottle is empty, I'll have to get some more, and Max's coat is back to its former glory of five years ago. Thick,
fluffy and shiny....plus the black skin is rapidly fading. I think we have a cure, folks. Look at it this way: It can't
hurt the dog, and the cost is reasonable. |

My little Snuggles who I got from Janesa's Pomeranians is the best, but he does have black skin disease. I changed his diet.
I gave them fresh berries, bananas and fresh vegetables (especially carrots and brocolli). I am looking for another pomeranian
whose parents do not have black skin disease. Snuggles did show signs of problem with one of his back knee, but stopped showing
signs after he turned one year old. For the past 20 years the only dogs that I had were small breeds. I love the small breeds
and my children are all grown.
I am looking for another pom. Both my husband and I love the breed. My Shih Tzu is getting on in years. I want to get another
dog before he passes away and Snuggles is left alone. Since I now have two male dogs it might be better if I get a female.
I love males, but I want to do what is best. My female Shih Tzu who passed away over three years ago was a beautiful dog. |

Wow, what an article!We used to raise mink. The geneticist, Dr. Shackelford, at the U of Wisconsin, Madison who was the mink
color consultant in the 60's & 70's was also doing research on deafness of the Dalmatian. I don't know how for he got in his
quest. |

I recently bought a pup that had a white mother and a merle father. The pup has a curly tail instead of one that lies flat
on his back. About one-fourth of one eye is blue. The rest is brown, as is the other eye. I was told by the breeder that
the blue in his eye meant he might be capable of producing merle puppies, like his father. Do you think the curly tail and
part blue eye are genetic defects? I wanted to breed him. |

I have 3 poms; 2 males, Cody a black male 7 years old, Lucky, a red male 4 years old and Princess a black female 5 yeras old.
They are everything Geneva says and more. I can't imagine life without them. Cody, my "first born" is the reason I get
up in the morning! He is my heart, the light of my life and apple of my eye. We also have a peek-a-poo Rebel, who is 10
years old and 4 cats. Our dogs have more toys than Toys-R-Us and my daughter who lives with me, can't wait to get home from
work so we can play. They understand when we say "see you tonight" when we leave for work and they are there to greet us
when we get home. What more could we want? |

Please take a look at this Dutch wildbird photo page - blue merle/white blackbirds evidently do exist in Europe. The word
'merle' is also old English for a blackbird.The geneticist who invented this term must have been familiar with these birds. |
