It has been months since Frieda died and I still miss her. I want to check back with her, ask what her opinion is about something,
talk about movies and books, ask her for background information about DIA history, see if she's going to an upcoming march.
Frieda was my disability rights mentor after I became disabled and decided I wanted to work for disability rights. I first
heard about her in the mid-90's when someone told me about "this small dynamo disability rights activist" named Frieda Zames.
She brought me to various meetings, introduced me to people I could work with on issues, and encouraged my efforts.
We went to movies together for fun and worked to make movie theaters accessible to people with disabilities. When we tried
to get into a sold-out movie, we realized we could push to buy tickets because we were bringing our own seats. ("Are the accessible
spaces sold out?" we demanded.) We shared meals and laughter, froze at demonstrations. And chatted on the phone. When I'm
on the bus, I want to call up Frieda and chat, ask her a question, laugh together, complain, strategize, hear her voice.
Frieda, you were a great fighter, a wonderful friend. Your mind was always working, thinking about the broad strokes of disability
rights, what we could work on next. I miss you.

I went to my first DIA meeting in 1992 at the Rusk Institute. Frieda Zames was the first person who came over, hugged me,
like she knew me forever, and said "Welcome". I continued to attend every meeting and was a Board Member of Dia for several
years. Frieda Zames and other longstanding Founders of DIA inspired me to get a Master's Degree in my late 30's and, have
a professional career. I went to and graduated from Columbia University School of Social Work. I will begin my fourth job,
in September as a School Social Worker for infants, children, adolescents and young adults who are severely disabled. I was
raised by my parents to be a fighter and advocate but, when I joined DIA and met Frieda and everyone else, I felt, "this is
where and with whom I truly belong".
I also socialized with Frieda and other DIA pioneers and remember a Christmas Day in which, we all cooked and ate dinner and
celebrated the holiday as friends but, most of all, Family.
It will take a million of us, to do the work of one Frieda.
You can rest now, Frieda. You've done more than your share and now, it is up to us, to continue the battle for an equal, and
just society. I love you, Frieda and thank you for giving me my tenacity in dealing with equal employment opportunities.
